Rudolf II. - Alchemy, Astrology, Magic Prague

Rudolf II., the Hapsburg emperor, took up residence at Prague Castle in 1583. He was an avid collector and generous patron. His court was an international community of artists, scholars, astrologers and mathematicians. All received a warm welcome – all were given free reign to explore their fields and push new boundaries of the known world. By 1600 his court was an international community of painters, sculptors, scientists, mathematicians and astrologers.

His lively interest in the sciences kept him in touch with research throughout Europe. The scholar John Dee came from England, together with spiritualist Edward Kelley and astronomer Tycho Braha from Denmark. This was a time of wonderful artistic vitality, the old and the new converged, and tradition and progress lived in harmony. Prague was seen as a cultural center of exceptional importance. Karl van Mander, painter and theorist wrote in 1604: ‘Whoever aspires today to do anything great need only come to Prague, to the greatest patron of the contemporary world, the Emperor Rudolf II.

During our exclusive tour on Segway wheels you will discover the secret language of old Prague's houses and corners. Venture to find, what remains hidden. Alchemy, Astrology, Magic: Prague as no one else can show you - just our English speaking guide on Segway wheels.

The favourite place of Prague Segway Tours

The Prague's favourite place of the Prague Segway Tours staff is a LENNON WALL - not only because the wall is about 150m from the office but also because is a symbol of freedom, love and the most popular place of our Segway visitors / riders.

At Prague's Kampa near Charles Bridge, on Grand Priory Square (Velkopřerovské náměstí), is colorfully painted wall, symbolizing the tomb of the famous frontman of legendary band The Beatles - John Lennon (died on 8th Dec, 1980). The wall became a place where people look up with admiration to the world-famous music icon, but also a place where people express their opinions and protests again the communist regime.

In the past was the garden wall known as the "Wailing Wall". That's because on the plaster of the walls the people pour out their hearts, and left various messages in a row, or love poems. The communist regime did not accept it, however, so the wall was painted several times.

The wall is changing day by day with the new texts and paintings, and thanks to benevolent owners, order the Knights of Malta, can everyone leave their message here, of course, on the theme of love and peace. Original painting of John Lennon is unfortunately lost beneath dozens of layers of the past.

We are looking forward to show you this special place during one of our sightseeing tours on Segway wheels around Prague - just ask for it.

Series "Bike for life"

Prague Maltese Square - home of the Prague Segway Tours

The office of the Prague Segway Tours and its meeting point is placed on one of the most picturesque Prague square - MALTESE SQUARE. The Maltese Square takes its name from the Priory of the Knights of Mala, which used to occupy this part of the Little Quarter. At the northern end stands a group of sculptures featuring St John the Baptist by Ferdinand Brokopf - part of a fountain to mark the end of a plaque epidemic.

Most of the buildings were originally Renaissance houses belonging to prosperous townpeople but in the 17th and 18th centuries the Little Quarter was taken over by the Catholic nobility and many were converted to flamboyant Baroque palaces. The largest palace is Nostitz Palace (part of the palace now houses the Dutch embassy) - in summer, concerts are given at the Palace. The Japanese embassy is housed - right next to your Prague Segway point - in the Turba Palace (1767), an attractive pink Rococo building designed by Joseph Jaeger.

The most visited places in Prague - CHARLES BRIDGE

Prague's most familiar monument, connects the Old Town with the Little Quarter. Charles Bridge is magnificent 14th-century bridge, with its files of Baroque statues, passes under an arch below a Gothic tower.

Until 1741, Charles Bridge was the only crossing over the Vltava river. It is 520m long and is built of sandstone blocks, rumoured to be strengthened by mixiing mortar with eggs. The bridge was commissioned by Charles IV in 1357 to replace the Judith Bridge built by Peter Parler. The bridge's original decoration was a simple cross.

The first statue - of St John Nepomuk - was added in 1683, inspired by Bermini's sculptures on Rome's Ponte Sant'Angelo. Today, due to wear and tear, many of the statues on the bridge are copies. The originals are kept in the Lapidarium of the National Museum in Prague and at Vysehrad. The Gotic Old Town Bridge Tower is one of the finest buildings of its kind in existence.
Charles Bridge is nowadays only for pedestrians but that is no problem using the Segway wheels specially design to operate in any pedestrian environment. The Segway is not considered as any motor vehicle. From these reasons is the Segway by far the fastest and as possible environmentally friendly tip how exploring the city, how to make sightseeing tour.

The most visited places in Prague – THE PRAGUE CASTLE

The Prague Castle, an ancient symbol of the Czech lands, is the most significant Czech monument and one of the most important cultural institutions in the Czech Republic. The Prague Castle was most likely founded around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Premyslids Dynasty (Přemyslovci). The Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m². A UNESCO World Heritage site, it consists of a large-scale composition of palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of various architectural styles, from Roman-style buildings from the 10th century through Gothic modifications in the 14th century.

The famous Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik was responsible for extensive renovations in the time of the First Republic (1918-1938). Since the Velvet Revolution, the Prague Castle has undergone significant and ongoing repairs and reconstruction. The Prague Castle complex consists of Saint Vitus Cathedral (one of the most recognized landmarks in Prague.

When Charles IV acquired the bones of St. Vitus, a popular fourth-century martyr, and brought them to Prague, the city became a center of the St. Vitus cult.), viewing towers (Several round towers were built along the walled castle – Daliborka, Powder, White etc.), museums and art galleries, a monastery, Golden Lane (a small picturesque street with colorful wooden houses. Legend wants one to believe alchemists attempted to turn metal into gold here, but in fact the alchemists lived elsewhere at the castle. It was actually goldsmiths living here in the 17th century who gave the street its captivating name.), several palaces, including Lobkowicz Palace, and St. George's Basilica; the latter being a popular venue for early evening classical concerts.

The most visited places in Prague - PRAGUE JEWISH QUARTER (JOSEFOV)

You can not visit Prague and not to see the PRAGUE JEWISH QUARTER (JOSEFOV)

This very interesting part of Prague is named after the emperor Josef II, whose reforms helped to ease living conditions for the Jewish, the Jewish Quarter contains the remains of Prague's former Jewish ghetto. As many of the Jewish died during the WWII and were forced by the communist regime to leave the country, the current Prague community numbers 5000 – 6000 people. There are two figures synonymous with this part of the city, Franz Kafka (1883 – 1924) and the mystical humunculus Golem created by Jehuda ben Bezalel, also known as Rabi Löw.

What to See

The Jewish Quarter in Prague contains the most well-preserved Jewish historical monuments in Europe. Six synagogues still stand in this region in addition to the historic Jewish Town Hall and the Old Jewish Cemetery, considered one of the most remarkable burial grounds of its kind in Europe.

Several of the synagogues feature museum-like exhibits outlining the history of the Jews in this region of Europe. After World War II, the Pinkas Synagogue was turned into a Memorial to the Jews of Bohemia and Moravia who were murdered by the Nazis and its walls are inscribed with 80,000 names of Jewish victims.

Josefov's Old-New Synagogue is the oldest preserved synagogue in Central Europe, Prague. Built in the late 13th century, it is of early Gothic style and features marvelous intricate stonework. All interior furnishings are originals. This synagogue now serves as the main house of prayer for Prague's Jewish community. This very interesting historic point is possible to visit during one of our guided tours on Segway wheels.

A slightly different experience from Prague

You're tired of the historic city center? Do you need more of nature? Do you want to know Prague from another perspective? Just discover and visit one of the Prague parks and protected natural areas - Divoka Sarka, Petrin park, Letenska sady, Hvezda park.

Divoka Sarka is, as one of the touristic guide describes, “now a picturesque valley located on the outskirt of Prague, but is also named after one of the pivotal figures in Czech mythology. While there is much uncertainty surrounding the historical accuracy of the legend, most believe the events are meant to have taken place in either the 6th or 7th Century. Prague as it is known today did not exist; what is now the city center was completely unsettled, but the largest of the newly created Slavic settlements is believed to have been located in what is now the Divoka Sarka valley.”

Today the valley is a popular area for people wishing to escape the heavily tourist center of Prague. From the cliffs are stunning views of the largely forested valley. There is also a lake complete with numerous sunbathing areas, and many picnic spots.

The valley is also ideal for trying something new - adrenaline and romance in one - riding off-road Segway x2 wheels.

Plan your private trip to Divoka Sarka with an English speaking guide and Segway wheels - more on www.prague-segway-tours.com
